  1. What benefits does the Oakland County Bar Association offer?
    The Oakland County Bar Association offers many benefits that cater to your legal needs. LACHES, a monthly publication, is provided to members only. It is a magazine that offers attorneys an opportunity to write articles and voice their thoughts about various aspects of the law. In addition to LACHES, there are more than 30 working committees. Participation will help you network with colleagues. Continuing Legal Education classes are offered for professional development. As a member you may register with the Speakers Bureau and Mentor Program. Numerous public service programs are a great way to enhance the reputation of lawyers with the general public. We also offer an OCBA members-only Lawyers Conference Room at the Oakland County Courthouse, Career Center, Room Rental Service, Golf Outing, Holiday Gala, Annual Meeting, Inn of Court, and Race Judicata.

  2. What types of memberships does the Oakland County Bar Association offer?
    The Oakland County Bar Association offers five types of memberships.They are:

    Sustaining Membership - Eligible to vote and hold office. A Sustaining Member's extra commitment to the association enables us to pursue the loftiest goals of the legal profession. Sustaining Member's names are periodically featured in LACHES magazine, recognized as stellar supporters of legal ideals.

    Regular Membership - Eligible to vote and hold office.

    Associate Membership
    - Licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan and engaged in full-time employment with a governmental agency or department,
    or 501(c)(3) organization.

    Law School Affiliate Membership
    - Although not active practitioners or members of the legal profession, they are employed by a law school, such as professors, teachers, teaching assistants and administrators.

    Legal Assistant Membership - Qualified through education, training or work experience and employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity in performance of legal services not primarily clerical or secretarial under the ultimate direction and supervision of a licensed attorney. Must be sponsored annually by an OCBA member who certifies as to the above.

    Student Membership
    - available to active law school students.

  3. How do you become a member of the Board of Directors?
    A member shall be eligible for election to the Board of Directors who has been a Regular Member for at least four (4) years immediately preceding such elections. Interested parties should submit a letter of interest to the nominating committee, which usually meets the 1st week of February. The nominating committee will submit two names for each position to be filled at the next annual election of directors. The report shall be filed with the Executive Director no later than February 15 of each year.

  4. Do you offer any discounts through membership?
    The Oakland County Bar Association offers many discounts, many of which are extremely popular among members. Members may refer to the complete listing in the Member Benefits section.

  5. How do I become a member of a Practice & Service committee?
    Once you register as a member of the Oakland County Bar Association, simply state the desired committee(s) you wish to join and you will be put on that committee(s) mailing list. You will receive meeting notices and any other relevant information. (Limited committees require appointment by the president.)

  6. Where is the Oakland County Bar Association located?
    The Oakland County Bar Association's address is 1760 South Telegraph, Suite 100, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302. The OCBA is located north of Square Lake Road on the west side of Telegraph Road, directly across from Lowes.

  7. If I join the Oakland County Bar Association during the middle of the bar year, will my dues be prorated?
    The Oakland County Bar Association does not prorate dues. You are expected to pay your dues in full whenever you decide to join or renew your membership.

  8. What types of annual events does the Oakland County Bar Association provide?
    The Oakland County Bar Association hosts four major events a year. They are the Golf Outing in July, the Holiday Gala in December, the Race Judicata in September and the Annual Meeting in June. Our active committees coordinate smaller events.

  9. When is the renewal period for OCBA bar dues?
    The fiscal year is from July 1 through June 30.

  10. Is Continuing Legal Education (CLE) offered and is it mandatory in the State of Michigan?
    Continuing Legal Education is not mandatory in the State of Michigan. Credits are mandatory, however, for those attorneys who accept criminal, probate, and juvenile appointments at the 6th Circuit Court. The Oakland County Bar Association is an accredited provider of this program and offers many classes throughout the year. They are held in the CLE Room at the bar offices.
