Course Description: How do current Michigan Court of Appeals decisions affect the ability of the attorney guardian ad litem (LGAL) to represent a child's best interests in court? Noted juvenile law attorney, H. Elliot Parnes, will discuss current case law involving LGALs - from the trial court to the Supreme Court. Topics of discussion will include:

  • Can an attorney who first represents the respondent mother become an LGAL for the child at trial?
  • Is an LGAL required to file a brief or appear at oral argument before the Michigan Supreme Court?
  • What is the LGAL's role in making sure the right to court-appointed counsel is provided to parents?

Each lecture in the series is worth credit toward juvenile assignment requirements. Credit for criminal assignment may be available.  Lunch will not be provided; however, participants are welcome to bring their own lunch.
